Expenses recorded include hats, shoes, books and school expenses for children Stephen and Richard; cloth, gloves, and shoes for Mrs. Archer; blacksmith work; transportation and sale of tobacco; tolls and "boatage" of wheat; hire of slaves; tax payments to the sherrifs of Amelia and Powhatan counties
  • The volume was used again between ca. 1870 and 1878 to record business transactions at Woodlands, including sales of tobacco and wheat; purchase of guano from Herbert, Hairston, & Co.; hire of [African American?] workers, including several members of the Finney family (DIck, Jordan, Park), "Aunt Katy', and James Woodson. There are scattered mentions of local weather, several garden records and occasional entries concerning breeding and sale of stock
