The booklet lists births and deaths of slaves belonging to George Mason of Pleasant Shade in Greensville County, Va. Mason continues entries following the end of the Civil War. There are seven pages of entries, each containing approximately 20 births and list the parents' names. Of interest is a note on the inside front cover "Hartwell & Grief.[?] Stole two sorrels Horses from me, the 2nd May, 1865, attempting to go to Yankies [sic] and were killed in Sussex Cty. the next morning, 3th [sic] May 1865."
